Research Shows After School Programs Are Beneficial

A new national study has found that after-school programs such as the L.Y.C.S. Leaders program, help students cope with behavioral problems and learn new skills to meet increased demands in school, the Philanthropy News Network reported August 9, 2002.

According to the study released by the Wallace-Reader's Digest Funds, 80 percent of parents surveyed said after school programs are essential support tools in helping children as they grow and develop.

The study, "Multiple Choices After School: Findings From the Extended-Services School Initiative", also found that after-school programs are an effective and affordable way to keep children safe and out of trouble.

"Parents said that their children's attitudes and behaviors in school changed and it kept their children out of trouble," said Jean Baldwin Grossman, lead researcher of Public/Private Ventures, which co-produced the study with the Manpower Demonstration Research Corp. of New York.

Among other things, the study found that after-school participants were less likely to start drinking or to skip school.

LYCS is an enjoyable, informative program whose goal is the prevention of substance abuse by our children. The program has been in existence for over 10 years promoting a healthy lifestyle by using a unique blend of education, recreation and community service.
